Is the 2027 Rivian R2 Worth Waiting For? The Real Math

Is the 2027 Rivian R2 worth waiting for? If you have something to drive in the meantime, yes. The $48,490 Standard Long Range lands in the first half of 2027 and costs roughly $188 a month less than the $57,990 Performance that Rivian will sell you right now, and it goes further on a charge. If your current car is on its last legs, the answer flips.

The short version

Waiting pays if you have a car to drive in the meantime. The R2 Standard Long Range arrives in the first half of 2027 at $48,490 with a Rivian-estimated 345 miles, and it costs about $188 a month less than the $57,990 Performance on sale today. Buying a stopgap EV to fill the gap cancels that saving out.

2027 Rivian R2 price and range, trim by trim

Rivian laid out the full ladder on 13 March 2026 and has stuck to it since. The prices below are before destination, tax and options, and they come from Rivian’s R2 page and the March announcement, both checked as of 16 September 2026.

Premium$53,990Dual-motor AWD, 450 hp330 mi EPA est.4.6 secLate 2026

Standard$44,990Single-motor RWDNot publishedNot publishedLate 2027

Two things trip people up here. The first is that “Standard” covers two different cars: a Long Range battery version at $48,490 due in the first half of 2027, and a smaller-battery version from $44,990 that follows in late 2027. The second is that the cheapest R2 Rivian has actually priced is also the longest-legged one. A claimed 345 miles on a single rear motor beats the 330-mile EPA figure both all-wheel-drive trims carry. That is physics rather than marketing: one motor, less weight, less drag from a second axle.

Rivian still has not published a range estimate for the $44,990 car. Open the comparison strip on its own R2 page today and there is a dash where the number should be, nearly a year after the trim was announced. Treat any 275-mile figure you see quoted for it as an outside estimate, not a Rivian one.

What the wait actually costs in dollars

Put both ends of the ladder on the same loan. Bankrate’s weekly survey had the average 60-month new car loan at 6.90% on 9 September 2026. Take $6,000 down on each, finance the rest over five years, and leave tax and destination out because they land on both cars equally.

  • R2 Performance, $57,990: about $1,027 a month, $61,621 paid across the term.
  • R2 Premium, $53,990: about $948 a month, $56,880 paid.
  • R2 Standard Long Range, $48,490: about $839 a month, $50,361 paid.

So the gap between the car you can order today and the one you are waiting for is $188 a month and $11,260 across the loan. If the Standard Long Range shows up nine months from now, the wait is worth roughly $1,250 for every month you spend waiting. That is a very high bar for any stopgap car to clear.

The Premium is the more interesting comparison, and almost nobody runs it. It is due in late 2026, so the wait is measured in weeks. It saves $4,741 over the same five-year loan against the Performance. What you hand back is 206 horsepower and one second to 60 mph. You keep the same 330-mile rating, the same dual-motor all-wheel drive, the same 210 kW charging and the same wood-trimmed cabin. If a Rivian advisor has told you the Performance is the only R2 you can have, that is true today and will not be true by Christmas.

Is the 2027 Rivian R2 worth waiting for if you need a car now?

No, and the reason is depreciation rather than patience.

Say you buy something now and flip it when the R2 lands. A Tesla Model Y Long Range AWD is $50,380 including destination with 327 EPA miles, close enough in size and price to be a fair stand-in. The iSeeCars 2026 depreciation study put five-year EV depreciation at 58.8% against roughly 45% across all vehicle types, and the steepest part of that curve is year one. Call it 22%. Twelve months on, that Model Y is worth about $39,300. You are down $11,000 before you have made a single R2 payment, which happens to be almost exactly the saving you were waiting for.

There is no federal cushion left, either. The $7,500 clean vehicle credit expired on 30 September 2025 under the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, so every price in this article is what you actually pay. What replaced it is a deduction of up to $10,000 a year of car loan interest on new vehicles assembled in the US, which the Normal-built R2 qualifies for. On the Standard Long Range that deduction covers roughly $2,700 of first-year interest, so it is worth a few hundred dollars at the margin, not thousands. If you are weighing timing across the whole market, we looked at whether to buy a car now or wait out the tariffs separately.

Buying now wins outright in three situations: you need a third row, you tow more than about 4,000 pounds regularly, or your daily drive is long enough that 345 miles of claimed range still leaves you charging on the road. The R2 does not fix any of those.

Rivian R2 vs R1S size difference

The R1S is 14.9 inches longer than the R2 and seats seven. No free-licence photo of the two parked together exists, so this is an R1S on its own, in Sonoma, California. Photo: Missvain via Wikimedia Commons, CC0

The R2 is 185.9 inches long on a 115.6-inch wheelbase, seats five and holds 90.1 cubic feet of total storage. The R1S is 200.8 inches on a 121.1-inch wheelbase, seats seven, and takes 17.6 cubic feet behind the third row or 90.7 cubic feet with the second row down. So the R2 gives up 14.9 inches of body and a row of seats, and gives up essentially nothing in maximum cargo volume.

Price is where that size difference stops being academic. An R1S starts at $83,990 for the dual-motor Premium as of 16 September 2026. That is $26,000 more than an R2 Performance, and it buys you 665 horsepower against 656. Nine. The R1S does add 410 EPA miles against 330, and the third row, which is the real reason to pay. Without those two things, the gap is indefensible.

In person the R2 reads like a shrunk R1S rather than a cheaper one. Same vertical oval lamps, same flat slab sides. It parks like a RAV4, which is the entire point of it. Anyone who has tried to reverse an R1S into a city garage with a pillar on the passenger side knows what losing 15 inches is worth.

What the R2 does in the real world

The EPA rates the R2 Performance on 21-inch wheels at 330 miles combined, 105 MPGe, 32 kWh per 100 miles and $700 a year in electricity, according to its fueleconomy.gov entry. Real-world numbers come in under that, as they always do. Edmunds ran its instrumented EV range test and got 304 miles, 26 short of the sticker, at an observed 33.6 kWh per 100 miles. On a sustained 70 mph highway run in Colorado on 20-inch all-terrain tyres, InsideEVs recorded about 259 miles.

Charging is solid rather than startling. Edmunds measured a 187 kW peak and a 133 kW average, enough to add 100 miles in 15 minutes and 9 seconds. That is slower than the best 800-volt cars and perfectly workable on a road trip, especially with a native NACS plug that opens up the Supercharger network.

Rivian’s own delivery record matters to anyone betting on a 2027 date. The company built 12,613 vehicles at Normal, Illinois in the second quarter of 2026 and delivered 12,194, ahead of its own 9,000 to 11,000 outlook, and lifted full-year guidance to 65,000 to 70,000 vehicles. R2 ramp costs added about $100 million in that quarter alone. The schedule is holding so far. If it slips, history says it slips by a quarter, not a year.

FAQ

When will the Rivian R2 be delivered?

Performance models are being delivered now, with public customer deliveries starting in June 2026. Premium follows in late 2026. The Standard Long Range is due in the first half of 2027 and the cheapest Standard in late 2027. Reservation holders get invited to configure in batches, ordered mainly by reservation date and delivery location.

Does the Rivian R2 have a NACS port?

Yes. Every R2 has a native NACS charge port, so it plugs into Tesla Superchargers with no adapter. Rivian puts that at over 21,000 Superchargers across the US and Canada, on top of its own Adventure Network. Peak DC charging is rated at 210 kW. You still want a CCS adapter for older public chargers.

How much does a 2027 Rivian R2 cost once you add options?

Paint upgrades run $1,000 to $2,000 and wheels cost about the same, so a fully specified Performance sits near $61,000 before destination and tax. The Launch Package is currently included on the Performance and bundles the tow package, Autonomy+ and a compact spare. Rivian has not published the option list for the Standard trims yet.

Is the $100 R2 reservation refundable?

Yes. The $100 reservation deposit is refundable and you can cancel any time before you configure. Once you configure and confirm an order you pay a separate non-refundable deposit, and your price, trim, battery and options lock in at that point. Holding the reservation costs you nothing but $100 sitting idle, which is the main argument for keeping it.

About this article: prices, trims, range figures and delivery timing were checked against rivian.com’s live R2 and R1S pages, Rivian’s March 2026 trim announcement and the EPA listing on fueleconomy.gov on 16 September 2026. Loan figures use Bankrate’s 6.90% average for a 60-month new car loan as of 9 September 2026. Real-world range and charging numbers come from Edmunds’ instrumented test, and Rivian’s Q2 2026 production and delivery figures come from its own quarterly release.
